Computer Building Camps

THE MOTIVATION

Many students in rural and low-income communities do not have access to computers at home. In a world that is becoming increasingly dependent on technology—both inside and outside of the classroom—these students are left at a disadvantage. The availability of computers at home opens students up to online educational resources where they can receive extra instructional support, remote communication with educators, and opportunities to develop digital literacy and citizenship skills.

WHAT ARE COMPUTER BUILDING CAMPS?

We partner with various community organizations in eastern North Carolina to host computer-building camps during which K-12 students get hands-on experience building computers and learning fundamental computer science concepts.

Students warm up with hands-on activities to learn about clustering, sorting, and algorithms. Next, the students learn about the function of hardware components as they put their machine together. Once the computers have been built, students take on the role of game developers as they evaluate the quality of user experience in Katabasis games and create bug reports for their suggested improvements.

At the end of the camp, kids are able to take the computers they built home with them.
