What’s Behind the Name?

IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY…

A katabasis (ka·​tab·​a·​sis) is an arduous journey that a hero embarks on to discover/recover something of tremendous value. The ordeals faced along this journey transform the hero into a person capable of weathering hardships and overcoming challenges they had thought to be insurmountable. Upon completing this journey the hero returns home armed with the knowledge needed to overcome both their personal challenges and those facing their community.

Education is more than simply imparting knowledge, it is a journey of self discovery. Children will face numerous social and intellectual challenges throughout their education that shape how they perceive their abilities and their position in society. Every child needs guidance along this katabasis, but too many children do not receive the resources and attention they require to succeed along their journey. Our mission at Katabasis is to create an environment that encourages each child to take on even the most daunting challenges while providing the resources and guidance they need, especially to those communities that are currently underserved. We are committed to facilitating learning, inspiring curiosity, and catalyzing growth in every person that embarks on a journey with us.
